Please take your sample in the morning. Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor. If your B12 is prescribed ask your doctor whether you should stop before testing.
This blood test is an advanced version of our Tiredness and Fatigue Check and includes tests which must be done with a venous sample (blood taken from a vein in your arm) as opposed to a finger-prick sample. This means that we can test more markers, and can include a full blood count where we look at the number, size and shape of your red blood cells. If your red blood cells are abnormal it affects their ability to transport oxygen around your body, a common cause of fatigue.

Feeling tired all the time is one of the most common reasons why people visit their doctor, but sometimes finding out the reasons for your symptoms can be a journey of trial and error. This advanced fatigue profile aims to get to the cause of low energy levels by looking at many of the common causes of fatigue.

Often fatigue is caused by anaemia, either from iron deficiency or because of low levels of B vitamins which are essential for the creation of normal red blood cells. This profile checks your iron status and active vitamin B12 levels, but also takes a detailed look at your red blood cells to make sure that they show no signs of anaemia. We also look at your white blood cells to check that infection or inflammation is not contributing to your symptoms, as well as vitamin D deficiency, a very common cause of low energy and aches and pains.

Other causes of fatigue include diabetes and an underactive thyroid and this profile includes tests for both conditions.
