Special instructions

Fasting is optional for this test. Eating fatty foods might affect the results of a small number of blood tests so we may advise a retest when you are fasted. If you are interested in your triglyceride, LDL or omega 3 levels, then we do recommend fasting. Do not eat for 12 hours prior to your test. Drink plenty of water, if you take medication then you are allowed to take it as you would normally. Avoid heavy exercise and eating meat-rich meals for 48 hours before your test.
The kidneys are two small, organs located on either side of the body, responsible for filtering waste products from the blood and removing excess bodily fluid in the form of urine. They control the concentration of ions and electrolytes in the blood such as phosphate, potassium and sodium and also play an important role in producing the hormone erythropoietin, which stimulates red blood cell production.

This check includes a kidney function test as well as a liver function test which checks your cholesterol levels, the level of bilirubin (a product of haemoglobin breakdown that is removed from the body) and various important enzymes which are vital for the correct functioning of the liver. A full iron status and heart disease risk check are also included plus a full urine chemistry and microscopy check to give a comprehensive health assessment of the kidneys.

*If you have been advised to get a kidney function test by your doctor then please contact our customer services team who can arrange a test which includes sodium and potassium.

Dr Sam Rodgers MBBS, MRCGP
