C Peptide Blood Test

C-peptide is released into the blood when insulin is produced by the pancreas. This test measures the level of C peptide in your blood to distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes when diabetes has just been diagnosed, to help find the cause of low blood sugar.

Special instructions

Do not eat for 12 hours prior to your test. Drink plenty of water, if you take medication then you are allowed to take it as you would normally. Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor.
C-peptide is a peptide that is made when proinsulin is split into insulin and C-peptide. C-peptide is generally found in amounts equal to insulin.

A C-peptide test can be done when diabetes has just been diagnosed and it is not clear whether type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes is present or to help find the cause of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), such as excessive use of medicine to treat diabetes or a noncancerous growth (tumour) in the pancreas.
