Zinc is necessary for immune fuction, wound healing, your sense of taste and smell. It is essential for cell division and growth. Zinc deficiency results from inadequate intake of zinc, or inadequate absorption of zinc into the body. Signs of zinc deficiency includes hair loss, skin lesions, loss of appetite and diarrhoea. This test measures the level of zinc specifically in your red blood cells.

Our bodies need only small amounts of zinc to function properly. Zinc can be found in red meat, poultry, pulses, seeds and nuts. Even though zinc is an essential requirement for a healthy body, too much zinc can be harmful. Excessive absorption of zinc can also suppress copper and iron absorption.
