Underlying Conditions Blood Test

A simple at-home blood test which looks for underlying conditions identified by the NHS as being more clinically vulnerable in relation to COVID-19.

Is it for you?

Do you want to know whether you may have an underlying condition that the NHS has identified as being moderate risk (clinically vulnerable) for coronavirus? Do you want to know whether you should be taking steps to help improve your risk factors during the pandemic? Or whether you may fall into the group the NHS advises to take extra precautions against coronavirus? If you want to know whether you may fall into the moderate risk group, then this test is for you.

Special instructions

Fasting is optional for this test. Eating fatty foods might affect the results of a small number of blood tests so we may advise a retest when you are fasted. If you are interested in your triglyceride or LDL levels, then we do recommend fasting. Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor. You should take this test before you take any vitamin or mineral supplements. Avoid heavy exercise and eating meat-rich meals for 48 hours before your test.

We’ve learned a lot about COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, including which groups of people are more clinically vulnerable if they get coronavirus. These include people with underlying conditions such as diabetes which is why the government is urging people to reduce diabetes risk factors such as obesity, poor diet and sedentary behaviour through the “Better Health” programme. The problem with many of the underlying conditions which can raise your risk if you get coronavirus, is that many people don’t even know that they are affected. Risk factors for heart disease and diabetes such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol and poor control of blood glucose are unlikely to cause symptoms, especially in the early stages, so people may be more likely to develop these conditions and not know it. You can read more about who is at risk from coronavirus on the NHS website.

This simple at-home finger-prick blood test helps you understand your own risks for underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, liver and kidney disease so that you can take steps to improve your health through lifestyle changes, as well take additional measures to protect yourself against coronavirus.

If your result suggests you could have an underlying condition our doctors will signpost you to your GP for a full diagnosis.
