Special instructions

Ensure no Coumadin, estrogen or anticoagulants taken in last 10 days. Clinical history must be provided.

Protein S is a natural anticoagulant in the blood. It works by activating another protein (protein C), which plays an important role in blood clotting.

Some people can be deficient in protein S, which increases the risk of blood clot formation. This in turn can lead to a raised risk of venous thromboses, which can be life-threatening.

Whilst some cases of protein S deficiency are genetic, its levels can also be reduced by other factors such as having liver disease or a vitamin K deficiency (which may occur in warfarin users).
