Special instructions

Please take your sample in the morning. Take this test between days 2 and 5 of your period. It can be taken at any time if you are not having periods. Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor. HRT and the contraceptive pill can affect the results of this test, taking the test during a break from these will give more accurate results. Avoid taking a finger-prick sample from a finger used to handle hormone-gels or hormone-pessaries in the past 4 weeks.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in women that affects the ovaries - resulting in the development of cysts on the ovaries which can become enlarged. PCOS is a common condition and in the UK affects around 7 in every 100 women. Investigations of PCOS focus initially on medical history, incidence of irregular periods (or none at all) and the existence of high levels of male hormones (androgens) in the body.

Our Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Blood Test includes tests for testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and the free androgen index (FAI) to indicate the amount of available androgens circulating in the blood. It also measures luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH); a high LH/FSH ratio of between 2:1 or more may indicate PCOS.

This test is for any woman who is experiencing any PCOS symptoms and wants to investigate further.
