Lower Respiratory Tract Infection Routine Sputum Culture Test

Infection (1 Biomarker)
A sputum culture test helps to detect and diagnose bacterial infections. Anyone can get a bacterial respiratory infection, but the elderly, those with a weakened immune system and those who are exposed to lung irritants, such as through smoking, and those with diseases that affect the lungs, such as cystic fibrosis, are at increased risk of a bacterial respiratory infection. Symptoms may include a cough, a sore throat, breathlessness, tight chest or wheezing and a fever.
If disease-causing bacteria are found during a sputum culture, then susceptibility testing is performed so that the appropriate antibiotics can be recommended.
