Infection (19 Biomarkers)

HPV (human papillomavirus) is a common group of viruses that affect the skin. HPV is spread by intimate skin-to-skin contact - including through vaginal, anal and oral sex. It is very common and most people will be infected by HPV at some time or another. Most HPV infections (9 in every 10) will be cleared by the immune system and cause no harm. There are more than 150 types of the virus. This swab test checks for 19 high-risk and low-risk types of HPV which can go on to cause genital warts or cancer.

High-risk types

High-risk types of HPV are those which can lead to cancer - namely cancer of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus and the mouth or throat. Different types are associated with different kinds of cancer - types 16 and 18 are present in about 70% of cases of cervical cancer. Being infected with a high-risk type does not mean that you will develop cancer, but it does increase your risk. You are unlikely to develop cervical cancer without being infected by HPV first.

The following are some of the main known high-risk types of HPV:

16 / 18 / 31 / 33 / 35 / 39 / 45 / 52 / 56 / 58 / 59 / 66 / 68

Low-risk types

Low-risk types do not cause cancers, but many of them are responsible for causing warts and genital warts. The main low-risk types of HPV are:

6 / 11 / 42 / 43 / 44

Types 6 and 11 are found in 90% of cases of genital warts.
