Gardnerella vaginalis is one type of bacteria that is involved, along with others, in bacterial vaginosis (BV) - a very common infection caused by an overgrowth of certain bacteria in the vagina.

Bacterial vaginosis is a common condition that is characterised by a thin or watery white or grey vaginal discharge, a strong fish-like smell, especially after sex, and burning, itching or irritation in the vagina. However, up to half of women with BV have no symptoms at all.

The causes of bacterial vaginosis and how it is passed on are not properly understood, although it mostly affects women who are sexually active and can be passed from a woman to another woman during sex.

You are more likely to get other STIs if you have BV which increases the likelihood of potentially serious conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease. If you are pregnant and have BV your risk of giving birth prematurely is raised.

This urine test detects the bacteria Gardnerella vaginalis, which helps support a diagnosis of BV in women with symptoms. It may also detect the presence of bacteria in women without any symptoms and will sometimes detect nothing in cases of BV caused by overgrowth of other types of bacteria. The results of this test should be shown to a sexual health specialist for interpretation together with any symptoms.

Bacterial vaginosis is usually treated with antibiotics. Male sexual partners of infected women generally don't need to be treated, although same-sex partners should seek treatment. It is common for BV to recur within 3 months, requiring further treatment.
