From the expert

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, is a very common condition in men where they struggle to achieve or maintain an erection. An occasional inability to do this is not usually an indication of a health problem - there are often short-term causes at work such as stress, tiredness, anxiety or drinking too much alcohol. However, a continuous problem with erectile function may be due to an underlying health cause.

Persistent erectile dysfunction affects about 10% of men and can be distressing. This test investigates physical conditions which may impact your sexual performance. Some men may have problems achieving an erection because the blood vessels in the penis narrow due to the build-up of cholesterol. For others the problem may be hormonal - low testosterone for example affects libido and sexual performance, while elevated prolactin may suppress testosterone production. This test looks at the physical causes of erectile dysfunction such as high cholesterol, diabetes, low testosterone, thyroid conditions and high levels of prolactin.

The physical causes of erectile dysfunction can often be improved through lifestyle changes or by medication such as statins or hormone replacement.

This test comes with a report from a qualified doctor and advice on what to do next if any of your results are abnormal.
