Special instructions

This test is affected by a range of common foods and medications. The following foods should not be eaten for 48 hours prior to the test: bananas, pineapple, plums, avocado, walnuts, kiwi fruit, tomatoes, chocolate and citrus fruits. Caffeine containing drinks should also be avoided. The following medications have the potential to affect your results: muscle relaxants, paracetamol, fluorouracil, antidepressants, isoniazid and phenothiazine drugs. These should all be avoided for 48 hours before sample taking, we recommend discussing with your doctor whether it is safe to omit your medications.
Catecholamines are hormones produced by the adrenal glands responsible for the body's fight or flight response in times of stress. They do many things in the body such as triggering nerve impulses in the brain, raising heart rate and narrowing blood vessels. This test measures the levels of dopamine, epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine in your urine, which are the main catecholamines in the body.
