From the expert

IBD is a group of chronic disorders which are characterised by inflamed and damaged tissues in the lining of the intestinal tract. The most common inflammatory bowel diseases are Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).

When there is inflammation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, white blood cells move to the area and release the protein calprotectin which causes an increased amount of calprotectin released into the stool. Measuring the amount of calprotectin in the stool is a useful way of detecting intestinal inflammation and distinguishing between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and non-inflammatory bowel conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS. Calprotectin is regularly raised in active IBD and the test is useful for monitoring the disease and the effectiveness of medication. It is also elevated in some cases of GI tract malignancy (e.g. colorectal cancer).
