Aspartate Aminotransferase, AST, is an enzyme found in red blood cells, liver, heart, muscle tissue, pancreas, and kidneys.

Low levels of aspartate aminotransferase are normally found in the blood. When body tissue or an organ such as the heart or liver is diseased or damaged, additional aspartate aminotransferase is released into the bloodstream. The amount of aspartate aminotransferase in the blood is directly related to the extent of the tissue damage.

Measuring AST helps to aid diagnosis of conditions such as hepatitis and cirrhosis. The aspartate aminotransferase test is for those wanting to diagnose a liver disease, those wanting to monitor the effects of treatment for a liver disease, or for those who want to investigate if any of their medications are significantly harming their liver.
