Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite. It is the most common protozoan infection in industrialised countries. It is transmitted during unprotected sex and whilst it can cause symptoms such as vaginal discharge and irritation in women it often causes no symptoms, this particularly true in men.
This test looks for small amounts of the genetic material (DNA) of Trichomonas vaginalis to help identify a current, active infection. This is a sensitive test that can identify even very small amounts of the parasite's DNA.
