Rubella is a viral infection otherwise known as German Measles. The virus causes a red rash and flu-like symptoms and although the virus is usually harmless, if a woman gets rubella in the first three months of her pregnancy, serious birth defects or a miscarriage may occur.
What might a low result mean?
The absence of rubella IgM antibodies rules out a current infection but does not show whether you have ever had a past rubella infection.
What might a high result mean?
Those who currently have or have recently been infected by the rubella virus will have a positive IgM antibody result.
