Protein C Activity

About

Protein C is a natural anticoagulant in the blood which works to cleave certain clotting factors to stop the blood clotting process. However, some people are deficient in protein C, leading to abnormal clot formation which can increase the risk of venous thromboses such as DVT.

What might a low result mean?

Whilst a deficiency in Protein C can be genetic, low levels can also be caused by liver and kidney problems or a vitamin K deficiency – which can occur in those taking warfarin.
