MMA - Urine

Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is a compound produced in very small amounts when amino acids are metabolised in the body. MMA reacts with vitamin B-12 to produce coenzyme A (CoA). When B12 levels are low and there is not enough available to act as a coenzyme, methylmalonyl CoA levels begin to rise and methylmalonyl CoA is instead converted to MMA.

What might a high result mean?

Elevated levels may indicate a deficiency in vitamin B12 as when vitamin B12 deficiencies occur, methylmalonic acid levels increase.
