Lipase is an enzyme produced in the pancreas that helps with the digestion of fatty foods and is necessary for the digestion and absorption of nutrients in the intestines. Small amounts of lipase are present in blood but if the pancreatic cells are inflamed, increased amounts pass into the blood.

What might a high result mean?

Elevated levels of lipase can indicate pancreatitis and are also sometimes seen in those with kidney disease, salivary gland inflammation or peptic ulcer disease.
