A Cryptosporidium infection (cryptosporidiosis) is an illness caused by the cryptosporidium parasite. These parasites are often transmitted through drinking contaminated water, eating uncooked, contaminated food or having close contact with other infected people or animals.
The most common symptom associated with a Cryptosporidium infection is mild to severe, watery diarrhoea and in most people the infection usually goes away within a week or two. But for those with a weakened immune system, the infection is likely to be more seriously affected.
This test checks for the presence of cryptosporidium parasites in a stool sample.
